USB and Providence Win Copa de La Paz Tournament Series

The Universite de Saint Boniface men’s and Providence women’s side have won the Manitoba College Futsal Championships.
The Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference Futsal Championships went down at Canadian Mennonite University with a series of great finishes.
MENS
On the men’s side it was the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers that finished first after the three tournament season format with a 6-1-1 record. They reached the final after manhandling Red River College by an 11-1 score line to setup a meeting against the #2 ranked USB side that made it to the final on the back of a 10-6 win over Providence.
Both squads split the regular season series with a win in the first two tournaments with CMU’s lone loss all season coming in a tight 3-2 loss at tournament 1 at Red River College in January before avenging it with a hard earned 6-5 win at USB a month later.
It was no surprise that the championship match would yet again be decided by a solitary goal as USB edged out CMU with an 8-7 win to clinch the title.
WOMENS
Red River College came into the MCAC Championships as favourites to hoist the hardware after finishing atop the standings with 19 points from 8 games.
They made a statement of intent in their semi-final bout with USB which they won easily 8-1. But they would run into a tenacious Providence Pilots side that finished third in the season with a 4-3-1 (W-L-T) record and that upset against hosts CMU with a lopsided 7-1 result in their semi.
It was fitting then that the only team to beat RRC was facing them in the final as Providence won the season series with a win and a draw.
Like the men’s competition, the final was decided by one goal and it was a classic with both teams going hard across the court throughout the contest. But it would be Providence that came through in the second half to take the title with a thrilling 8-7 win.
