Toronto Internationals win U12 World Futsal Championship

ORLANDO – It was a year-long slow build this season for head coach Kevin Sooknanan. After finishing third while playing a year up at last year’s USA Futsal World Championship, Sooknanan put together a plan to compete this year for the title.

After finishing in first in the very competitive U12 division this year in the Toronto Futsal League, the Internationals lost a one goal heartbreaker in the semi-final round that gave them the motivation to win in Orlando.

After winning bronze in last year’s competition it was immediately evident they meant business generating an astounding 3-0 record in group stage play with a goals for and against of 49-3. In the semi-final round they defeated ABK Futsal of Michigan by a 14-1 score to earn a spot against fellow U12 juggernaut, Sports & CIA of Sao Paulo, Brazil, who also went through their opposition like butter.

The championship match, held at the HP Fieldhouse at the ESPN Wide world of Sports Centre, was an instant youth classic, going back and forth throughout the match so much so that it required overtime after being tied at seven a piece.

The intensity carried over into the extra frame and it would be local youth prodigy Damar Dixon digging down deep in his bag of tricks to deliver a series of brilliant moves against three defenders before slotting it in between the keeper’s legs to give Toronto the coveted lead. The team would hold off for the remaining few minutes left in nail biting to earn their championship crown.
