Athletes off to China

A Special Olympics soccer team that trained in futsal with the Golden Ears United Soccer Club will head for Shanghai, China, next month for the Special Olympics World Games.

The team, which plays in the open men’s division, just wrapped up a nine-week futsal program at the Samuel Robertson Technical secondary field and won their division.

Ten of them are on Team Canada and will leave for Shanghai on Sept. 26.

“It’s pretty exciting for them,” said Billy Johnstone of the GEUSC.

The team consists of five members from Surrey, two from Coquitlam and one each from Mission, Abbotsford and Kelowna. They will play five-a-side soccer at the event, which boasts athletes from 103 countries.

The team goes year-round, training three times a week.
