Huskies make Futsal History!

March 10, 2009

The Keyano Huskies Men’s and Women’s Futsal teams made history before a packed house at the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre on March 7, winning the ACAL Championship!

The Women’s Huskies Futsal team beat the Ambrose lions 3-1, to become the first Keyano Women’s soccer team to win the Alberta Colleges Athletics League (ACAL) Championship. The Men’s team followed suit, beating the Ambrose Lions, with a score of 5-2, to win the Men’s division and defend their Championship title.

The two-day event started on March 6 and was held on the Alberta Building Trades Field. Mark Oxer, Huskies Athletic Coordinator/Women’s Soccer Coach, was excited about the victory. He said both teams are ecstatic about their wins and thank everyone for their support.
“The men’s and women’s teams employed different strategies, to best work with their team strengths and expose the weak elements of their opponents,” said Oxer.

“Winning the ACAL championship will help the Huskies programs continue to grow,” Oxer added.

Oxer says among notable Women players, Adrianna Martinez stood out. “She stepped up her game this weekend, and was a dominant offensive force. Candice Wade played all around solid games, and was on the pitch most of the game. KJ Dorrington stepped into the position of goal for this weekend, and played very well. She made keys stops, and had great ball delivery from the back, helping push the game,” Oxer explained.

The Men’s team had Mike Stapley, who put on a clinic, scoring two goals on Friday, and earning a hattrick on Saturday. Lucas Curran played great between the pipes backstopping the Huskies to two wins.

Oxer said hosting the Championship was a great experience, which provided his team the opportunity to showcase the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre for visiting athletes and parents, and demonstrate that Keyano is a great place for student athletes.
