The Sudbury Futsal League, Northern Ontario’s top futsal league, started their 2009/10 campaign this past weekend and will run all season in some of the best venues that Nickel City has to offer. There is also big news that the league may start playing with FIFA rules sooner than you may think.

With U9 and U10 boys boys divisions looking more and more likely to be introduced this season, along with one for U11 girls, Futsal Sudbury looks to expand on their successful adult league that currently has over a dozen teams currently in its roster.

Futsalcanada.ca had the chance to visit the kind folks at Futsal Sudbury in the summer and were treated to a great tour of Laurentian University and its high quality gyms that are being used throughout the weekends for league play. The newest gymnasium facility, built earlier this year, is coveniently attached to the classic Ben Avery Gym where the Voyageurs of the CIS play volleyball and basketball. The surface is great for futsal and is versatile for youth matches as well as adults and actually meets FIFA’s international regulations.

Another great place that the league was able to secure was the gym at Cambrian College, home of the Golden Shield in the CCAA system. The gym is used for mostly adult matches on Sundays and automatically puts Futsal Sudbury in a great position to host large tournaments for futsallers from Cornwall to Thunder Bay and everyone in between.

Other venues currently being used include Northeastern on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Macdonald Cartier on Friday nights.

We were informed via email this morning that the Sudbury Regional Soccer Association has accepted the league’s application to become a sanctioned club, which means that the region is a lot closer to becoming the fourth pillar of futsal in Ontario along with London, Ottawa, and Toronto. We will provide updates as they come in and hope that we see further developments for the sport within the region.

The league is one of the most affordable in the country with a flat cost of $125 that includes everything, even a jersey.
