CONCACAF Futsal Club Championships: Matchday 3
The CONCACAF Futsal Club Championships is now underway in Honduras. Sporting Outlaws from Montreal have now completed their group stage. Full results and standings inside.
After landing in Tegucigalpa on Saturday the team were able to train at the UPNFM Arena before getting their first taste of international play on Monday evening against Costa Rican champions Grupo Line Futsal. Despite a strong attempt by the young and athletic squad, including a brace from Oussama Laguel, the experienced Ticos were simply too much to handle on the night as Sporting fell by an 8-3 score. In their second match of the competition the Outlaws were edged out by a 8-6 score to Mexican champions, Sidekicks FC, in a tough affair on Tuesday afternoon. It was a tough loss considering the team was up 6-5 with three minutes remaining and turned out to be the highest scoring match of the competition thus far. A reason for that was Diyaeddine Abzi who scored four goals while Aldair Melendez notched a pair.
Their final match against the Cuban champions, Habana FC, was an entertaining tilt that went back and forth all match long. Sporting become the first Canadian team to generate a point at the CONCACAF Futsal Club Championships as they went on to earn a 4-4 draw. The team will not advance to the knockout stage but did Canada proud with their efforts. They are one of the youngest teams in North America and certainly have a bright future ahead of them.
