FIFA have announced that Colombia will host the 2016 Futsal World Cup. The South American nation won the right to host the world’s post prestigious international futsal competition by beating out some formidable competition:

The Czech Republic had long lobbied hard to host the competition after successfully hosting the 2005 UEFA Futsal Euro. Futsal powerhouse Iran, France, two-time world champions Spain, and Puerto Rico had shown strong interest but withdrew their bids.

The tournament is expected to take place in the fall, as was the case for the 2012 edition in Thailand. Eight cities have been proposed as potential hosts including Ibaque, Villavicencio, Bucaramanga, Bogota, Cucuta, and Neiva.

The format for the competition has not been announced though speculation indicated that the current 24 team format will be utilized again.

Canada will attempt to qualify through one of CONCACAF’s four allocated spots in the competition.
