Club Deportivo Platense Shock Toronto Impact in a 6-5 comeback thriller

November 30th, 2010
Toronto- National team players from the Toronto Impact Futsal Club, formerly known as Toronto Cruz Azul, suffered a shock defeat last night in Toronto Futsal League action via an unbelievable comeback from Club Deportivo Platense.
CDP came into the match with a record of 2 losses and 2 draws, not impressive for the team that won silver at the 2009 OSA Futsal Cup earlier this year. They started off poorly as the highly experienced Impact squad deftly manouvered the ball around the court before executing one of their notoriously potent attacks on net.
The Impact, winners of the 2009 US Super F Championships and numerous Canadian tournaments, got off to a great start in the first half as Elbio Lombardi netted a pair of goals before shots from Eduardo Jaragui and Timo Garzon made it 4-0. Garzon blasted a low shot to extend the lead to 5. As things looked to get worse for CDP, they switched up the formation and it paid off immediately as goalkeeper Pablo Alvarez’s shot from just inside half was enough to Canadian national futsal goalkeeper Roy Blanche, and young up and comer James Longville added another to cut it to 5-2 at half.
The pressure from CDP mounted in the 2nd half as a injury-riddled Impact squad were quickly tiring. Adello Vasquez scored the 3rd for Deportivo and, just moments later, the lead was reduced to a single goal when Sam Delgado scored placed in down low after wandering patiently around the goal. Two minutes later, Alvarez notched his 2nd of the game and the unbelievable 6-5 comeback was complete when Longville finished off a play led by Nick Garcia.Alvarez, CDP’s goalkeeper, notched his second of the match.
The final minutes were intense as Impact goalkeeper Roy Blanche, arguably North America’s top ranked futsal keeper, came out of his net on multiple occasions to press back the CDP forwards as he moved the ball around the perimeter. His usual targets were Garzon in the post and Lombardi and Jaragui on the wings. But it was to no avail as Pablo Alvarez held down the fort with some fantastic saves to preserve the shock win for CDP.
