Canada names Kyt Selaidopoulos as Futsal Head Coach
Kyriakos (Kyt) Selaidopoulos has been appointed Canada Soccer’s National Futsal Coach for the upcoming cycle of CONCACAF and FIFA competitions. Coach Selaidopoulos will lead the program for both the CONCACAF Futsal Championship and the FIFA Futsal World Cup Colombia 2016.
Selaidopoulos has recently served as provincial team coach for the Federation of Soccer in Québec. He has a FIFA Futsal Level 1 coaching certificate (2011) as well as his Canada Soccer Coaching B Licence (2014). He has also served as Technical Director for CS Mont-Royal Outremont.
“I am very excited and truly honoured to have the opportunity to take our National Futsal Team to the next level,” said Selaidopoulos. “It will be important that the provinces, territories, and Canadians playing abroad collaborate and band together to help us make history over the next few months.”
Selaidopoulos is a former national Futsal player, having represented Canada in CONCACAF competitions in both 2013-14 and 2012. He also represented Canada in Beach Soccer, including the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Rio de Janeiro 2006.
Coach Selaidopoulos’ first task will be to lead Canada to the 2016 CONCACAF Futsal Championship in Costa Rica this May. Canada will first have to face USA in a two-match preliminary round on 5 and 6 May with the winner of that series advancing to the eight-team CONCACAF tournament (8-15 May). From that competition, four nations will qualify for the FIFA Futsal World Cup Colombia 2016.
The 52-match FIFA Futsal World Cup Colombia 2016 runs 10 September to 1 October 2016. The 24-nation competition will be played in Bucaramanga, Cali, and Medellin.
