ACAC Tournament 2 Results

MEDICINE HAT – On Family Day weekend, teams from across the ACAC and ACAL took time away and traveled to Medicine Hat for the second Futsal tournament of the season.  Overall, seven schools fielded both a men’s and women’s team culminating in two epic shootouts to decide the tournament champions.

The tournament played host to twenty-four round robin games spanning over Friday evening and all day Saturday on two fields.  On Sunday, twelve playoff games were scheduled to decide the final standings and tournament bragging rights at the Fieldhouse on the Stampede Grounds.

In the women’s semi-finals, Mount Royal defeated Grande Prairie in a 2-1 nail biter while Medicine Hat B blanked Keyano 5-0.  That set the stage for a final which had fans on the edge of their seats for the entire second half following an equalizer by Mount Royal to tie the game at one.  Regulation time would not be enough and the two teams embarked on five rounds of penalty kicks which saw Medicine Hat College come out on top for a 2-1 victory for their second tournament victory of the season.

On the men’s side, Lakeland College defeated Briercrest in the first semi-final 8-3.  The second semi-final was an all-Medicine Hat final as Team B won 4-3.  Lakeland College and Medicine Hat College would cap off the tournament with a performance worthy of a standing ovation.  The Rustlers struck first followed by three quick Rattlers goals to end the half.  In the second half, the Rustlers took the play to the Rattlers and managed two goals to tie the game and force penalty kicks.  Fans stood as they were treated to both tremendous shooting and superb goaltending as the teams matched each other for seven rounds.  Lakeland College sealed their second Futsal championship of the season when Medicine Hat was unable to match the Rustlers’ goal in the eighth round.

The next Futsal tournament will be hosted by Keyano on the weekend of March 20th.  With the skill level shown in the first two tournaments this season, fans should be once again treated to an eye-opening, get off your seat and cheer experience.
