July 9th

Baltimore- Toronto Cruz Azul were victorious in their first group stage match in a tight contest at the USFF National Championships this evening after defeating a persistent Safira FC with a 3-2 win.

The first Canadian entry into the USFF tournament, considered to be the best mens futsal tournament in the United States, Toronto showcased an abundance of skill that dazzled and surprised the crowd from start to finish.

26 year-old left footed sensation Alex Lopez fired one of his trademark bombs into the bottom right corner of the Safira net around the 10 minute mark to open up the scoring and put Toronto up 1-0. The team broke down the Safira defense well by employing a potent pentagon attack that was led by Canadian National Futsal Goalkeeper Roy Blanche and held on to their lead at half.

The 2nd half opened up a lot more and the movement from both teams resulted in some excellent plays and one clinical counter attack that was finished off by Etobicoke defender Eduardo Jaragui to put Toronto up 2-0 early in the half.

Toronto suffered a mental lapse just a few minutes later and Safira capitalized with a quick goal and kept the game close for the remainder of the half. But it was Lopez's 2nd goal of the match that was the deciding factor and Blanche made an incredible double-footed sliding save late in the game to preserve the win.

Note: After the match, team captain Roy Blanche was appointed to the Ontario Soccer Association's Futsal Committee. The folks here at the Futsal Canada team congratulate him. He is sure to be a huge contributor to the game across Canada.
